Growing in Prayer
Prayer is an essential part of our spiritual lives, and it is something we should strive to develop into a daily habit. Our dedicated catechists understand the importance of daily prayer and take great care in teaching our youth the many ways we can communicate with God.
Our 3rd and 4th graders learned that prayer can take many forms, including praise, repentance, asking, and listening in silence. One way to remember these different types of prayer is through the acronym PRAY:
- P – Praise: Praise God for the many gifts and blessings He has given us.
- R – Repent: Ask God for forgiveness for the mistakes and sins we have committed. One way to do this is through a daily examination of conscience.
- A – Ask: Bring our needs and desires to God in prayer, including prayers for others who need His healing, comfort, and help.
- Y – Yield: Slow down, become still, and listen for God’s voice and His plan for our lives.
Some of our students also explored a beautiful form of prayer called Lectio Divina. They opened their Bibles to a specific passage of Scripture and spent time prayerfully reflecting on God’s Word. As they listened for a word or phrase that stood out, they considered how it might relate to their daily lives and help them grow in faith.
Our First Communion students also took time to reflect on the many blessings in their lives by writing down the things for which they are thankful. Many expressed gratitude for family, friends, food, water, transportation, and the gift of life. One student shared gratitude for the ability to learn new things, while another expressed thankfulness for the Holy Trinity and holy water. Their responses are wonderful reminders that we, too, can find countless simple blessings to appreciate in our everyday lives.
Our Confirmation candidates are also deepening their understanding of what brings true happiness and fulfillment in life. They are learning that lasting joy comes from knowing, loving, and serving God, while a self-centered life can leave us feeling empty.
We challenge you to make more time for prayer throughout your day! Whether it is thirty seconds of silence, a simple “I love You, Jesus,” the recitation of the Rosary, time spent with Jesus in Adoration, or attending Mass, even the smallest moments of prayer can lead to a profound transformation in our relationship with God.
Let us continue to grow in faith, recognize the blessings God places in our lives, and make prayer a meaningful part of each day.
