Congratulations to Deacon Steve Pemper
On this coming Thursday, September 10, Deacon Steve will celebrate the 10-year anniversary of his Deaconate ordination.
While he was preparing and studying to become a deacon, his pastor, Fr. Larry Franckovich, from the then-St. Augustine Parish in West Allis called me and asked if we would be willing to share Deacon Steve since his parish was small and didn’t have a full-time Deacon. I responded positively to Fr. Larry, and ever since, we have been blessed to have Deacon Steve with us and what is now called the St. Barnabas Congregation-St. Augustine Site. We hope to have him here for another 10 years.
Also this week, we congratulate Rene Rillorta and his family ahead of his ordination to the Permanent Deaconate. On Saturday, September 12, Rene and his classmates will be ordained. To help Rene celebrate, St. John’s is hosting an All-You-Can-Eat Pancake Breakfast from 9:00 a.m. until Noon on Sunday, September 13. Please plan to attend and congratulate our newest Deacon at St. John’s, Deacon Rene Rillorta.
Liturgical Celebrations This Week
Tuesday, September 8: The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary: This feast day marks the birth of Mary, the Mother of Jesus. It is not a Holy Day of Obligation, but Catholics are encouraged to attend Mass.
Wednesday, September 9: St. Peter Claver: A Spanish Jesuit who ministered to over 300,000 African slaves in Cartagena, he helped captives in the holds of slave ships discover Christianity. Catholics should attend Mass if possible in his honor.
Saturday, September 12: The Most Holy Name of Mary: Catholics venerate this Feast Day as Mary was the Mother of God. She always points us to God and His infinite goodness and helps us open our hearts to His ways, wherever they lead.
Please join us for Mass Monday through Saturday at 8:00 a.m. The Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet follow daily Mass. Also on Fridays and Saturdays, Confessions follow Mass. Confessions may also be done by appointment with Fr. Michael. Please call him to make an appointment.
Summer Mission Appeal
Sr. Jan Gregorcich, a School Sister of Notre Dame and President of the Global Partners Running Waters Board, and Andrea Stapleton, an Associate of the School Sisters, will both be here next weekend, September 12 and 13, inviting us to partake in the Milwaukee Archdiocesan Annual Mission Appeal. Please consider making a generous donation to this appeal as it helps bring clean water to villages in Central and South America. If you would like to contribute by check, please make it out to St. John the Evangelist and include MCP in the memo line. Special Mission Appeal envelopes are also available in the Narthex and Parish Office.
St. John Prayer Shawl Ministry News
Do you knit, crochet, or do other needlework? Would you like to learn? You are invited to join others in the parish for crafting and conversation on Stitch Night in the St. John’s School Multi-Purpose room on Thursday, September 3, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Please enter the school through the north door (Door 12) of the Church. Yarn, needles, and hooks will be available.

Christian Women Society News
The Christian Women Society will begin its new season with Mass on Thursday, September 10 at 6:00 p.m. in Church. Yearly dues of $5.00 are due at the meeting. If you are unable to attend, please drop your check off at the Parish Office or mail it there. Please, checks only and make them payable to St. John’s Christian Women. There will be a speaker on Butterflies at the next meeting. All women of the parish are welcome to join them for Mass and the meeting in the Hall.
St. John’s Holy Name Society News
The St. John’s Holy Name Society will gather for Corporate Communion at the 8:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday, September 13. Rosary will begin at 7:20 a.m. Breakfast will follow in the Church Hall. All men of the parish (and their sons) are invited to join the Holy Name Society. The All-You-Can-Eat Pancake Breakfast is open to all parishioners in honor of Rene Rillorta.
Respect Life Ministry Baby Wipe Drive
The Women’s Support Center is in need of baby wipes. These wipes will go into layette bags that are given to new moms. Space in each bag is limited, so they need small packages with no more than 80 wipes per bag. The wipes will be collected the weekend of September 26 and 27, but the baby wipes can be brought to the parish office anytime in the next few weeks.
Women’s Spiritual Retreat-Save the Date
Ladies of the parish, please consider attending the next women’s retreat at the Redemptorist Retreat Center from October 9 to October 11. The theme is “Surrender and Catch,” based on Fr. Michael Crosby's book, “Finding Francis, Following Christ.” St. Francis learned the power of listening and surrendering to God, and going forward to catch God’s true purpose for us. Consider joining other women in celebrating the sacraments, discussions, and quiet meditation, surrounded by the beautiful grounds of the retreat center. To register, please call (262) 567-6900. Parish Blood Drive
The next St. John’s Blood Drive, administered by the Christian Women Society, is just a few weeks away on Monday, September 14. With that in mind, please do not donate blood at any other upcoming blood drive; schedule with our blood drive instead. Your efforts truly make a lasting impact as our blood drive gives patients and their families the gift of a brighter tomorrow. Your generosity brings hope and healing to those who need it. Our parish goal is to collect 35 blood products to help meet the high demand from local hospitals for patients such as new mothers, car accident victims, and heart surgery patients. Each donation means three patients will benefit from this lifesaving gift.

First Day of School
Welcome Back, Students and Staff
Our first day of the 2026-2027 school year was August 25! All students and staff gathered outside in the morning to greet one another. We began our day by praying together as a community before heading indoors. Our first days of school have been awesome!
The soccer league season starts on September 12 for our St. John’s School athletes. All games are played on the St. John’s fields. Each Saturday, games are scheduled between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Sunday games are between Noon and 4:00 p.m. There is no admission fee, and the concession stand will be open.
If you love soccer, want to see children competing, playing, and smiling, or are just looking for a fun way to spend a weekend day, please come out to the St. John’s fields and support our student athletes in action.
Today and Every Day Be a Peacemaker
Sunday, September 6, 2026 | Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time | Matthew 18:15–20
Friends, in today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches us how to correct a brother or sister. What is so rich here is the pursuit of the issue with a deep care for the person in question and also for the entire family of the Church (since love is our constant call). And then the wonderful conclusion: “If he refuses to listen to them, tell the church. If he refuses to listen even to the church, then treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector.”
This sounds, at first, like a total rejection, but then we recall how Jesus treated the Gentiles and tax collectors - eating with them, pursuing them, drawing them into his circle. There might be a moment of rejection and expulsion in the process of fraternal correction, but it is only provisional and only for the sake of eventual reconciliation.
St. Augustine, who was never afraid to speak the hard truth when necessary, followed the recommendations of Matthew 18 very concretely. Over the table in his episcopal residence where he dined with the priests of his diocese hung a sign that read: “If you speak ill of your brother here, you are not welcome at this table.”
