St. Blaise and the Blessing of Throats
This Tuesday, February 3, is the memorial of St. Blaise. It is on this day that we traditionally bless throats as we ask God for healing from all throat ailments and other diseases. We will have the blessing of throats on Tuesday immediately after the morning Mass, and then the regular Tuesday devotions of St. Anthony, Rosary, and Divine Mercy will follow.
Lent
Lent is just 18 days away. This year, Lent begins on Wednesday, February 18. Ashes will be distributed after the homily during Mass. There will be three parish Masses at 8:00 a.m., Noon, and at 6:30 p.m. These days before Lent are a good time to start planning what you will do for Lent. Perhaps look at your most frequent sin or biggest downfall and decide what you will do to overcome it. What will be the Lenten sacrifice or penance that will be helpful towards overcoming your sins?
A Lenten booklet will be available with daily Scripture readings and writings to enhance our Lenten Prayer. There is a $2 donation per book. However, if you cannot afford the two dollars, you may make a smaller donation. This is in addition to the Word Among Us for Lent, also $2, and available in the narthex.
Palms
If you would like to discard your blessed Palms from last year, please bring them to the back of the church. It is helpful for us if possible not to have them wrapped in a rubber band.
Pancake Breakfast
I would like to extend a big thank you to all those who helped organize last Sunday’s Pancake Breakfast in celebration of Catholic Schools Week. I believe this is the 58th year of St. John the Evangelist School. Throughout the years of being here, I regularly meet adults who tell me they were part of the first graduating class or the first student in the first grade. Once again, thank you for St. John’s generous history, which has allowed our school to continue for the past 58 years.
