Deceased Parishioner Prayer Group
As I mentioned last week, beginning in November, a new ministry is starting at St. John’s, one that will pray for parishioners who have died in the past year. When we think about “loving our neighbor,” what better way to show that love than to pray for those parishioners we have lost. The Catholic Church has long advocated praying for departed souls. Such prayers are extremely powerful not only for those souls but also for those who pray for them and for the families they have left behind. Eternity is forever. Imagine the comfort those families will feel knowing their loved one is being prayed for on a regular basis. All you need to join this group is your time, dedication to prayer, and commitment to follow through for those who have died. There will be no meetings; instead, each member of the prayer group will be given a short list of names to pray for, specifically each month. Then, each subsequent month, members will be given a new set of names. We will continue this for an entire year and then begin with a new set of names. Interested? the Souls in Purgatory
Once again, we will make available an inspiring and informative booklet concerning souls in Purgatory. The information and prayers found in the booklet were put together in 1880 by Fr. Berlioux. A Plenary Indulgence may also be gained for a Holy Soul in Purgatory by spending at least 30 minutes before Christ exposed in the Blessed Sacrament.
The Vatican Book of Indulgences states: to receive the Indulgence, you must have a confession within eight days and be in a state of grace; you must receive Holy Communion on the day of the Indulgence; you must say two prayers for the Intention of the Pope; you must be aware of and ask for the Indulgence; and you may ask for only one Plenary Indulgence per day.
We ask a $5 donation for the booklet, which will be used for Mass Intentions for the Souls in Purgatory. The booklet will be available in the front of Church near the Holy Water dispenser or may be picked up in the parish office.
Celebrating the Saints at Daily Mass
This week, there are a number of beloved Saints who will be remembered and celebrated at our 8:00 a.m. morning Mass. All are welcome to join us.
Tuesday, October 14, we celebrate the Feast Day of St. Callistus I, Pope and Martyr.
Wednesday, October 15, St. Theresa of Jesus, Virgin and Doctor of the Church, is remembered.
Thursday, October 16, we commemorate the Feast Days of St. Hedwig and St. Margaret Mary Alacoque.
Friday, October 17, is the Feast Day of St. Ignatius of Antioch, Bishop and Martyr.
Saturday, October 18, is the Feast Day for St. Luke the Evangelist.
Enjoy St. John's famous Fish Fry and raise money to support the Women’s Support Center of Milwaukee on Friday, October 17, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. This event is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and the Board of the Women’s Support Center.

Donations of diapers, wipes, and infant clothing are also greatly appreciated.
The Catholic Schools Walk will be held at the local level again this year. Our students in Grades 1-8 will walk on October 15 at 1:00 p.m. to celebrate Catholic schools and our faith. Mrs. Pitcher has set up a route using the path north of our school. We will celebrate our faith by stopping along the route to pray. If you would like to join us for the walk, we will begin with a prayer in the Gym at 1:00 p.m. We are walking to raise money for our school’s technology program, specifically to purchase software as well as replacement Chromebooks. If you are interested in making a donation to support our walkers and technology program, please send cash or a check (made out to St. John the Evangelist with 'Catholic Schools Walk' in the memo section) to the school or parish office.

The Christian Women's Society will hold its next meeting at 6:00 p.m. in the Church Hall on Thursday, October 9. They will have a demo of “Sit & Be Fit.” Please bring your filled “Boxes of Joy” as well as non-perishable food items for the Craft Fair Raffle Baskets (no outdated items, please). Also, please bring your yearly dues of $5, paid by check only. All ladies of the parish are welcome to join.
The Holy Name Society will gather for Corporate Communion at the 8:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday, October 12. Rosary will begin at 7:30 a.m. Breakfast will follow Mass in the Church Hall. All men of the Parish (and their sons) are invited to join the Holy Name Society
The next meeting of the St. John’s Prayer Shawl Ministry will be on Friday, October 17, from 10:30 a.m. to Noon. Bring your new creations of Prayer Pockets, Shawls, Lap Blankets, Twiddle Muffs, and Baptismal Gifts. If you enjoy knitting and crocheting, we would love for you to join us and learn more about this ministry.

Friends, today’s Gospel recounts the Lord’s healing of ten lepers, only one of whom comes back to give thanks. Leprosy frightened people in ancient times, just as contagious and mysterious diseases frighten people today. But more than this, leprosy rendered someone unclean and therefore incapable of engaging in the act of worship. It is not accidental that the person responsible for examining the patient in ancient Israel was the priest. The priest’s job was to monitor the whole process of Israelite worship, very much including who could and couldn’t participate in the temple.
What is so important about worship? To worship is to order the whole of one’s life toward the living God, and in doing so, one becomes interiorly and exteriorly rightly ordered. To worship is to signal to oneself what one’s life is finally about. Worship is not something that God needs, but it is something that we very much need.

Every Other Tuesday (twice per month), 1:00 to 2:00 a.m.
Saturdays, Midnight to 1:00 a.m.
We are also seeking a second Adorer for many of the late evening and overnight hours, particularly on Saturdays at 1:00 a.m. Tuesdays at 10:00 p.m. Also on Wednesdays and Fridays at 11:00 p.m. If you are looking for some quiet time to be with Our Lord, please consider signing up.
