Saints Remembered This Week
This week, we have two Feast Days to note. On Wednesday, July 9, we celebrate St. Augustine Zhao Rong and Companions. Christianity arrived in China by way of Syria in the early 7th century. But a thousand years later, the battle between China and those seeking to spread Christianity took a dramatic and deadly turn. Between 1648 and 1930, at least 120 Christians were killed. St. Augustine was one of them. At the time, he was a Chinese soldier who accompanied a Bishop of the Paris Foreign Mission Society to Beijing, where they were martyred because of their Christian faith.
On Friday, July 11, we celebrate St. Benedict, a sixth-century abbot who was credited with spreading Christianity throughout Europe. As a young man, he spent three years in solitude, then founded several monasteries, attracting people who wanted to live their faith more deeply. The “Rule of St. Benedict” emphasized prayer, work, simplicity, and hospitality, and is still known as a rule for monks to the present day.

Raffle and Various Booth Items Needed
We need items for various festival booths. Please bring items to the parish office.
- Mystery Package Booth: Items should be NEW and worth at least 50 cents for men, women, and children.
- Raffle Booth: Larger items such as electronics, appliances, lawn equipment, or any other larger items you think someone would be eager to buy a chance to win.
- Grocery Booth: A wide variety of non-perishable food items is needed.
- Gentlemen’s Chest: We need new and unopened bottles of wine, whiskey, vodka, gin, and after-dinner cordials.

"Go Out and Set Your Soul on Fire for God!"
When the United States entered World War II in 1941, Archbishop Fulton Sheen published a brief but powerful book, entitled A Declaration of Dependence: Trusting God Amidst Totalitarianism, Paganism, and War. That book is still in print today. In it, Archbishop Sheen emphasized that “The Declaration of Independence … is a Declaration of Dependence.” He explained that, “We are independent of dictators because we are dependent on God. God is the necessary factor of our salvation. As a result, he is to be the center of our lives. His ways ought to permeate every aspect and area of our lives: education, employment, pleasure, mourning, socializing, etc. All is done in sight of the omnipotent Lord, and all we do should be done reflecting this knowledge. Our every interaction should be filled with the love of our Savior.”
Archbishop Sheen tied this to the rights highlighted in the Declaration: “Our Declaration of Independence affirms that liberty is an ‘unalienable’ right, because a gift of the Creator. In other words, it makes us independent of tyrannies and dictators by making a Declaration of Dependence on God.” But what happens if a man ignores that? Archbishop Sheen explained that, “The real evil in the human situation, then, lies in man’s unwillingness to recognize his finiteness, his creaturehood, or the possibility that there exists something greater than himself.”
This July 4th, let us acknowledge not only our independence from tyranny and dictatorship but also our dependence on God and religion. Living in the light of such dependence is what makes us a truly free country. As President George Washington himself once said, “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports.”

All women are invited to the second monthly meeting of Millions of Monicas on Wednesday, July 9, at 7:00 p.m. in the Church. Join with other Catholic women who are being called by the Holy Spirit to imitate St. Monica as they attend this prayer ministry and pray for their children who have left the Church. They will pray for their children to return to the practice of their Catholic faith. There is no cost associated with attending this hour of prayer.
Friends, our Gospel reveals to us what Jesus wants his followers to do and how they ought to do it. We are a missionary church. We are sent by the Lord to spread his word and do his work. The Gospel is not just something we are meant to cling to for our own benefit; it is a seed that we are meant to give away.
Prayer is not incidental to ministry. It is not decorative. It is the lifeblood of the Church’s efforts. Without it, nothing will succeed; without it, no ministers will come forward. At all times, pray, pray, pray.
Poverty and simplicity of life are prerequisites to the effective proclamation of the Gospel. Anthony, Benedict, Chrysostom, Francis and Clare, Dominic, Ignatius, Mother Teresa—across the board, the most effective proclaimers of the Gospel are those who rely on God's providence and strip themselves of worldly concerns.
What is the first thing that the minister should do upon entering a city? “Cure the sick in it.” Christ is Soter, healer of both body and spirit. The second great task of the Church is to proclaim that “the kingdom of God is at hand.” The Church is an announcing, proclaiming, evangelizing organism.
