84th Street Church Entrance and Exits Closed
Due to sidewalk repairs, the Church entrance and exit from 84th Street will be closed for 10 days beginning Monday, June 16. Please enter the church parking lots from the upper lot or down by the school entrances on Cold Spring Road and exit either by the school exits or in front of the Rectory until the project is complete.

The history of Father’s Day dates back to June 19, 1910, when it was first celebrated in the state of Washington. The holiday was proposed by Sonora S. Dodd, who wanted to honor her father, a Civil War veteran who raised her and her siblings. It became a nationwide holiday in the U.S. in 1972. Let us celebrate our Dads, living and those who have died.
Saints Remembered This Week
There are two saints celebrated this week on the church calendar. On Thursday, June 19, St. Romuald, Abbot, is remembered. Born into an aristocratic family, he grew up in a luxurious environment and knew little of religious devotion. Yet, years later, he founded a monastic order in the early eleventh century. He revived the practice of hermit life, allowing for greater solitude in a communal setting, and lived an entire life of penance. And at Saturday’s morning Mass on June 21, we celebrate the feast day of St. Aloysius Gonzaga. Similar to St. Romuald, St. Aloysius lived his early years in his family’s castle, and against his father’s will, he joined the Jesuits at the age of 18 and gave up his right to his inheritance. He went to Rome where he volunteered to serve in the hospital during the great plague of 1591. It was not long before he came down with the plague himself and died on the Feast of Corpus Christi on June 21, at the young age of 23.

Raffle and Various Booth Items Needed
We need items for various festival booths. Please bring items to the parish office.
- Mystery Package Booth: Items should be NEW and worth at least 50 cents for men, women, and children.
- Raffle Booth: Larger items such as electronics, appliances, lawn equipment, or any other larger items you think someone would be eager to buy a chance to win.
- Grocery Booth: A wide variety of non-perishable food items is needed.
- Gentlemen’s Chest: We need new and unopened bottles of wine, whiskey, vodka, gin, and after-dinner cordials.
We had our annual planting day on May 23. Each class started growing their garden crop from seeds in their classrooms in March, and we transferred our seedlings to the garden. The day began with a prayer service in the garden, and then each class, under the guidance of our wonderful garden coordinator, Jane Ehrmann, spent time planting their crops. Families have volunteered to take care of our garden over the summer. It was a great learning experience for our students and a lot of fun.

- An engaging catechesis on the role of the Pope in the Church
- There will also be time for community prayer and reflection.

“Popcorn for Pops” will return next weekend for Father’s Day. It was very popular last year. Once again, Pro-Life Wisconsin is supplying three-ounce bags of cheddar cheese and caramel corn from Badger Popcorn. The cost is $3 per bag or two for $5. The Respect Life Committee will sell “Popcorn for Pops” at all Masses this weekend.

Sound of Freedom is a movie that shines a light on ruthless child traffickers. It will be shown at St. John’s on Tuesday, June 23, at 1:00 p.m. and again on Wednesday, June 24, at 6:30 p.m. in the church Hall. The movie is based on an incredible true story about a federal agent’s attempt to save a kidnapped child from her captors in Colombia.
A law enforcement officer, familiar with the problem of human trafficking in Milwaukee, will give a brief address and answer questions from the audience. Admission is free, and the Hall is handicap-accessible.

Friends, today’s Gospel declares that when the Spirit comes, he will guide us into all truth. There is a story I’ve heard about Jean-Luc Marion that, if it isn’t true, should be. In the midst of a lively lecture on Déscartes, a student asked a pointed question about God. Marion looked at her and said, “Go to Sunday Mass for a year and then return and ask me that question again.”
Marion’s response was not just a clever one-liner. If true knowledge of God depends upon immersion in the Holy Spirit, then that knowledge is a function of an entire form of life, involving prayer, self-denial, the corporal and spiritual works of mercy, and the forgiveness of one’s enemies. We don’t think our way to an understanding of God so much as we live our way to it.
Thomas Aquinas always said that he owed his theology far more to the persistence of his prayer than to the acuity of his mind. His penetration of the divine mystery flowed from his life in the Holy Spirit. And so today we pray, “Come, Holy Spirit, come!”
