The Presentation of the Lord: February 2
This weekend, we celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. In years past, the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple concluded the Christmas season. Forty days after the birth of a child, Israelite parents presented their newborns at the temple in Jerusalem. Luke says that the parents of Jesus obeyed this law. In doing so, they revealed Him as the fulfillment of the law.
It is Simeon’s prophecy that connects the action of presenting the child Jesus to God to the symbol of Light and, in the past, candles. In the Gospel from Luke, Simeon’s words upon seeing the infant Jesus are: “Now Master, you can dismiss your servant in peace; you have fulfilled your word. For my eyes have witnessed your saving deed displayed for all peoples to see; a revealing Light to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel. Christ becomes the Light for all nations.”
Jesus and the Eucharist Study
We all love a good story—from the characters and the twists and turns of a captivating plot to the dynamics of a conflict and the resolution at the end. Perhaps we love stories because they give us insight into ourselves, animating a deeper sense of meaning in our lives. The Bible is the story of God’s love for us. It begins with Him creating us out of love, redeeming us by that love, and finally transforming us in His love. This divine author is love—an exchange of love within the life of the Blessed Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. What a story! St. John’s is offering this study on Monday evenings at 6:30 p.m. (until 8:00 p.m.) and on Tuesday afternoons at 1:00 p.m. (until 2:30 p.m.). Each session will consist of video programs and small table discussions. All are welcome; both programs will be held in the Hall. There are a total of seven sessions.
