Month of May: Dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God
Traditionally, the church dedicates this month of May to the Blessed Mother. On May 13, we remember the first apparition of Our Lady of Fatima and her call to pray especially the rosary.
At St. John’s, we honor the Blessed Mother in a special way each year with the Crowning of Mary. This year, it will be held on Wednesday, May 7, at 6:30 pm. We invite our children, especially those who just received their First Communion, to come in their First Communion attire. It is also an opportunity to celebrate our 8th graders as they prepare to graduate in a few short weeks. Please celebrate the Blessed Mother and join other parishioners as we celebrate Mary, the Mother of God. Please consider praying the rosary at home with family or after weekday Masses.
Also, it is a reminder for us to have a May Altar in our homes. A May Altar features an image of the Blessed Mother and any of your other favorite saints, and oftentimes bouquets of flowers. If you are fortunate to have fresh flowers, that’s a plus.
Wear Something Red
In two weeks, we bring the Easter Season of 2024 to a close with the beautiful celebration of the Solemnity of the Feast of Pentecost. There are any number of Pentecost Novenas that can be prayed and found online. This is a blessed time to begin praying for the outpouring of the gifts of the Holy Spirit in our lives, our families, parish, country, and world. Come Holy Spirit.
The official liturgical color for Pentecost is Red, so I encourage and invite everyone to wear something Red to church, particularly on the weekend of May 18 & 19, as we celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the early church and upon us.
